As an experienced musical theatre artist, scholar, and instructor, I struggled to find materials that adequately address musical theatre in an academic manner.  To help fill this gap, I worked over the past few years writing a textbook with my colleague, Dr. Bud Coleman.  Our finished product is Backstage Pass: A Survey of American Musical Theatre.   It is an anthology and chronological survey of American musical theatre, detailed by artist, with accompanying sections on music and theatre theory, race, gender, social/cultural context, production analyses, and performer spotlights.

This textbook successfully serves both large humanities courses as well as intimate, discipline-specific BFA seminars. Backstage Pass, in its first edition by Kendall Hunt Publishing, is the textbook of record at University of Colorado at Boulder (for a core humanities course serving approximately 400 students a semester) and has been used by University of Denver and St. Catherine University for specialized musical theatre seminars.  Other universities are currently looking to adopt the book for their musical theatre survey/history courses.
